For the love of Big Band...
The depression- era “dirty thirties” gave birth to a distinctive musical style that came to be known as “swing”. The radio airwaves and dance halls were alive with the sounds of swinging big bands. “Swing” became the popular listening and dance music of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s.
Saxophone, trumpet and trombone sections played tightly arranged harmonies, featured soloists improvised melodies, rhythm sections laid down infectious, lilting beats. Bandleaders such as Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Duke Ellington became household names and developed huge followings. Famous singers such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald all started their careers with the big bands.
Today, Swing Street is a big band faithful to the style of those classic bands of the swing era. The band boasts a driving rhythm section, tight saxophone and brass sections able to go from a whisper to a roar in a split second, fluid soloists and great singers. Much of our repertoire is drawn from the music of those famous bandleaders.
Come out and catch a performance. We guarantee you’ll be unable to sit still. We’ll have you tapping your toes and itching to get up and dance!
